About the author
Norman L. Miller is a retired U.S. Air Force member, former Olympic bobsled coach, and author of the Cold War thrillers IceSpy and Inside the Cold War — novels deeply rooted in his own extraordinary life.
In the late 1980s, while on what was supposed to be a simple goodwill mission to Latvia, Miller found himself caught in a real-life spy drama. Targeted by the KGB for abduction, he had to be hidden, smuggled to Estonia, and spirited across the Baltic Sea to safety. What unfolded became the foundation for his gripping debut novel, blending sports, espionage, and high-stakes international intrigue.
Miller’s work captures a pivotal moment in Cold War history. During a historic press conference in Riga, where he and the Soviet Minister of Sports announced the Soviet bobsled team’s visit to Lake Placid for the 10th anniversary of the 1980 Olympic Games, the minister stunned the world. When asked, “Who invited the Americans to the Soviet Union?” he replied, “I did not invite the Americans.” That simple statement marked what many believe was the first public signal that Latvia intended to break from Moscow’s rule — a stand that later cost the minister his life.
As the Associated Press reported in a 1990 story, the scene surrounding Miller’s mission read like something “straight out of a spy novel: disinformation, Swiss bank accounts, rendezvous with the Russians, cash transactions that can’t be traced… dangerous international activity where one wrong move can spell disaster — or death.”
Through his writing, Miller preserves this untold chapter of Cold War history, offering readers a rare insider’s view of a time when sports, politics, and espionage collided. Humble in spirit, he writes not for personal acclaim, but to honor the extraordinary people and events that shaped his life — and to share a remarkable story the world still needs to hear.
